Originating in India, yoga is a combined mind-body practice aimed at improving one’s
overall well-being. Today, there are over 8 types of yoga, each with a specific purpose.
This article will talk about which style of yoga is right for you.

Anusara

The word “anusara” means flowing with grace. By focusing on movement, meditation
and breathing techniques, anusara yoga aims to connect the mind, body and heart to
connect you to your inner self. Anusara yoga increases strength, flexibility and balance,
and is a great way to explore the mental and spiritual benefits of yoga.

Ashtanga

Ashtanga yoga is a fast-paced and rigorous style of yoga, that follows a set of pre-
determined sequences. As one of the harder, more “athletic” types of yoga, it is not
recommended for beginners, but rather for people already familiar with basic yoga
stretches and movements. Ashtanga yoga is like a cardio workout, and is great for
weight loss and increasing a person’s connectedness to their own body.

Bikram

Bikram yoga is an intense style of yoga using a set sequence of poses, which are done
in a room heated to 40°C to allow users to get into the stretches deeper. The poses are
designed to help the body detox, improve flexibility, relieve stress and heal chronic pain.
Like ashtanga, Bikram yoga is one of the more physically challenging types of yoga,
however, for those who can stand the heat, it makes for a great workout.

Hatha

Hatha yoga is a term that is used to describe any form of yoga where the focus is on
teaching physical postures, (as opposed to focusing on the spiritual side of yoga). Hatha
yoga is recommended for beginners, as it is a great way to learn the basic stretches of
yoga before progressing to other types such as Ashtanga and Bikram.

Hot yoga

Hot yoga is very similar to Bikram yoga in that the poses are done in a heated room

however it follows a difference sequence to the Bikram yoga poses. Hot yoga is great
for people who like the benefits of doing yoga in a heated room, but want a workout that
is less intense than Bikram yoga.

Iyengar

Iyengar yoga is a form of yoga that emphasizes precision and alignment, with the aim of
strengthening the body through holding poses longer. Unlike other forms of yoga, where
participants can naturally progress into the poses, Iyengar yoga requires correct
movement in all the poses from the beginning. Iyengar yoga is best for beginners, as it
is a great way to learn how to form the poses correctly, before attempting the more
advanced forms of yoga.

Restorative

Restorative yoga is a passive form of yoga designed to help the muscles relax, and
become strong without any extensive effort. For some, restorative yoga can be more
beneficial than a nap. As one of the ‘easier’ forms of yoga, restorative yoga is great for
beginners and yogis of all ages.

Vinyasa

Vinyasa is another intense form of yoga that focuses on fluid movement. Participants
are taught how to easily transition from one pose to the next. Vinyasa classes will
typically play music to make it a fun cardio workout, while also encouraging participants
to get in touch with their artistic, creative sides.

Yoga is a great practice that can benefit participants in so many ways. People who do
yoga regularly report better flexibility and strength, weight loss, increased energy,
concentration and mindfulness, with reduced stress. With a style and level for everyone,
yoga is a great workout to incorporate into your fitness routine.
